Can a cat heal from a broken femur by itself?

My cousin had the same thing happen to his cat and he couldn't afford the surgery either, so he had the vet cast the cat's leg, it healed just fine but now the cat walks with a bit of a limp (it's barely noticeable) maybe your Grandmother would be willing to do that? To do nothing at all seems cruel.
